In our beautiful Shenandoah Valley lies the town of New Market. New Market, VA is home to approximately 2,200 residents. If you’re looking for a quaint town with a rich history, New Market just may be the place for you.
Let’s rewind many years ago to May 15, 1864. New Market, VA was where Virginia Military Institute cadets rallied with the Confederate Army against Union Soldiers. The Battle of New Market is just one of the Valley Campaigns fought in the summer of 1864.
According to local history, “Every year VMI cadets commemorate the 85-mile march from Lexington to New Market, which ended in their victorious charge at the Battle of New Market.” Additional festivities to honor this history include a civil war re-enactment on the anniversary of the campaign.
Another interesting landmark in New Market is the Southern Kitchen restaurant. A family style restaurant that features Southern classics like country ham dinners, peanut soup, pork chops, and pies! The restaurant makes an appearance in the popular travel writing book, Roadfood: The Coast-to-Coast Guide to 900 of the Best Barbecue Joints, Lobster Shacks, Ice Cream Parlors, Highway Diners, and Much, Much More. Other restaurants in New Market include Johnny Appleseed Restaurant, Godfather’s Pizza, Subway, Burger King, McDonald’s, Jalisco Mexican Restaurant, and more.
Though the majority of homes in New Market lie in Shenandoah County, there are still many that you can find in Rockingham County. When on the Rockingham County side of New Market, students attend Plains Elementary School, J. Frank Hillyard Middle School, and Broadway High School.
