Elkton, VA, named for a stream called Elk Run, is a small town in eastern Rockingham County. It was originally incorporated on March 14, 1908. Home to approximately 2,900 residents as well as the East Rockingham High School Eagles, Elkton sits betweenSkyline Drive and Massanutten Resort.
The town is accessible via Route 33 east-west and Route 340 north-south. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes to reach Interstate 81 from Elkton. Because of its convenient location and accessibility to the river and railroad, Elkton is a popular destination for industry. Merck and Coors have both set-up businesses on the outskirts of this small town.
Nestled along the banks of the South fork of the Shenandoah River, Elkton boasts great views, boundless opportunities to see wildlife, and great fishing. When in Elkton, you’re also not far from the amenities of Massanutten Resort. A golf course, a waterpark, skiing/snowboarding, and more. Nor are you far from the serenity of Skyline Drive. Summit hikes, waterfalls, abundant plant life and wildlife.
There is also plenty to do in Elkton. You can visit local stores, grab your groceries at the Food Lion, or visit one of the town’s many restaurants. There is a McDonald’s, a Dairy Queen, a Pizza Hut, a Burger King, and several local restaurants, including Italian and Mexican dining options.
The Elkton town park is an active place, too. Be sure to check out a Blue Sox game while you’re in Elkton. The Elkton Blue Soxare a part of the Rockingham County Baseball League. Catching a game is a treasured Valley past time for many residents, as is attending the Elkton Autumn Days festival in the fall.
If you’re a Civil War buff, Elkton is a great place for you. The Confederate Army had a large stronghold in Elkton, especially because the Miller-Kite house served as the headquarters for General Stonewall Jackson during his Valley Campaign. The home is now a museum and landmark. In addition, the town’s General Store turned Post Office operated as the Confederate Post Office.
